Founded on December 15, 1821, Lawrenceville is the largest city and county seat of Gwinnett County, Georgia. Lawrenceville is named after a commander of the frigate “Chesapeake” during the War of 1812, Commodore James Lawrence, who is famous for his words, “Don’t give up the ship”. The town grew up around the town square, which later became the site of one of the first courthouses in Georgia.
